Allen Toussaint is one of the most influential figures in New Orleans R&B. He's had a successful solo career. He's written and produced hit songs, that have been covered, and in some cases, made popular by artists like The Rolling Stones, The Who, Otis Redding, Dr. John, Irma Thomas and Aaron Neville.
He got his break at just seventeen years old, when he sat in for Huey Smith during a performance with Earl King's band in Alabama.
His career peaked in the '70's, when he grew into a funkier sound, writing and producing for artists like The Meters, Dr. John, Robert Palmer and Solomon Burke.
He also collaborated with Elvis Costello for The River in Reverse, and they performed together at Bonnaroo 2006. His next effort, The Bright Mississippi, is due out this year.
