Malian singer and guitarist, Vieux Farka Toure, is the son of the legendary Ali Farka Toure, one of Africa's most renowned musicians. He quickly stepped into his own spotlight with his debut release in 2006.
Although his father wanted him to pursue a career in the military, Vieux took after his father because he realized he had the music within him.
In 2001, he became a student at the National Arts Institute in Bamako, taking up guitar and percussion, while writing his own music. Not even two years later, famed kora player Toumani Diabate became Vieux's professional mentor.
He's putting the finishing touches on his second album, which will be released in late spring on Six Degrees Records.
He kicks off his U.S. tour at Bonnaroo, and I'm anticipating a collaboration with his mentor, who is joining Bela Fleck's African Project.
Some of those other world music artists at Bonnaroo you may like:
Bela Fleck and Toumani Diabate, Femi Kuti and the Positive Force, King Sunny Ade
